Polly Styrene RIP

I must admit that I haven't been following  the news much of late but I am sorry I missed the news that Polly Styrene (born Marianne Elliot-Said), formerly of X Ray Spex had died last week.

She was being treated for  breast cancer which sadly had spread to her lungs and spine. She was 53 years old.

Free Portrait Offer

As both regular readers will be aware I am working with my nephew to create a new portfolio. We have some fun ideas for shoots.

This of mutual benefit: It gives me experience of model direction and gives him practice at modelling.

However I want to gain more experience of portrait photography. To this end I am offering Bloggers in the London area (and those in Essex living close to Havering) a free photo shoot.

If you are interested, contact me at noreply@blogger.com to discuss requirements (no naughty photos of course!). I will come to you, take the photos. I will then send you photos by email. You are free then to download, make prints etc.

The only condition is that any photos I consider to be of merit will appear on my photography website. They will not identify you by either real or blogger name.

Unlike my post about the First cosmonaut on 1 April this is not a hoaxSource URL: http://extravagancedeplumes.blogspot.com/2011/04/

Embarking On A Kylie Pilgrimmage

(Important Announcement: I'm going on vacation for the next week - the content of which I'm about to self-involvingly describe - and, thus, for the next 7 days darrlin bands is going all auto post via posts that I have authored over the last couple years but never published for varying reasons. So enjoy. Perhaps. I hope. And I'll catch back up with you in real time soon.)

I am ashamed of many things in my life, dear readers. My inability to use chopsticks. My fear of the trough at Wrigley Field. My affection for "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." But I am not, never have been and never ever will be ashamed of my love for the music of Kylie Minogue. I mean, she's hot, yes - is she ever - but, irregardless, her music rocks, and the very fact that her music rocks is actually a critical part of why she's so hot. Any minute of any hour of any day of any week of any month her music automatically makes me feel like I'm young, even if I'm feeling old, and it's a Saturday night in some place, any place, I really want to be where tomorrow and yesterday are meaningless. You know in Springsteen's "Racing in the Street" where in the last line of the last verse he sings about riding to the sea to wash the sins from his hands? Kylie's music is the sea that washes the sins from my hands. Long ago I lost track of how many times I've been told to pony up my "man card" on account of my fondness for Kylie when considering that straight males in American society are only "allowed" to like certain things and long ago I stopped giving a shit. Life is too damn short to not like Kylie. Thus, when she announced she was returning to tour in North America for only the second time ever, I flipped my proverbial lid. I'd seen her, of course, the first time she came through Chicago in 2009 and wrote on this very blog: "I, we, all of us, need that second go-around with Kylie." And then asked, almost fearful, "Will she return?" Well, she was returning! One problem: three months and a couple weeks ago I learned Kylie was not returning to Chicago for her second go-around.

I was heartbroken. Devastated. Crestfallen. Genuinely. I could not fathom it. I had not even considered the possibility that she would not make it back to the city where I live. Would she really choose Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale over Chi-town? (As my friend Ashley, who had planned on attending with me, commiserated in an email: "Fucking Fort Lauderdale???") Apparently. She wasn't even putting on a show within driving distance. We had lost. Woe was us. My dream of seeing a show at every single one of Kylie's North American tours was dead only two tours in. Pardon me while I throw myself off the Michigan Avenue Bridge.

Oh, but dear readers, I forgot about one thing. Namely, my old mistress Fate.

The Friday evening that very same week I attended a charity event at Murphy's Bleachers for my friend Dave's office and paid $25 to drink all the beer I wanted to do away with my no-Kylie blues. I also bought $20 worth of raffle tickets for the event's grand prize - two Jetblue airline tickets. When it came time for the grand prize of the raffle, simply assuming I wasn't going to win because, seriously, I wasn't going to win, I thought to myself - honest to God - "If I actually win this thing, I'm going to New York to see Kylie Minogue." The raffle tickets had come in the form of playing cards and when the announcement came up that the winning card was the four of spades I looked at the four of spades in my hand for what felt like a good three hours. Surely, that wasn't a four. Or a spade. Couldn't be a spade. Not a chance. I must be seeing things. That must be a club. Or a heart. Right? In fact, it was my friend Matt who looked at my card and hollered "You won!" So I did. He pulled me to the front of the room and it was confirmed. Victory was mine. The plane tickets were mine. I was so shocked the guy running the event literally told me to "be happy" to which my friend Dave - knowing me all too well - replied "You don't understand, all you've done is add to Nick's anxiety."

Indeed. From that point forward I was bombarded with advice - not just that night but for days afterwards - by people telling me where should I go and what I should do. Jetblue doesn't go overseas so that was out but they do fly down Caribbean way and to Cancun which is where some guy at Murphy's Bleachers whose name I still don't know told me I should go. Someone else told me I should go to Costa Rica. Someone else told me I should go to the Bahamas. Everyone had thoughts on the matter. I had thoughts, too. Alaska. San Francisco (where I've been once and always wanted to be again). St. Lucia. But......

A little over 10 years ago, my friend Rory, a fellow E Street Disciple, convinced me to fly with him to NYC to see Bruce Springsteen's last show of the Reunion Tour at Madison Square Garden. I remember people at the ad agency asking me what I had done while I was in New York. "Did you see the Empire State Building? Did you see the Statue of Liberty?" "No," I said, "I saw Bruce." I know it's hard for some people to understand - and I don't necessarily want or require them to - but Bruce, to me, is just way cooler than all that what-have-ya.

I'm going to get so high on her music I might just not ever come down.
Oh, don't get me wrong, there are places on this planet I still want to visit. But I know myself. I know who I am. I know how I roll. Even if I could have used these Jetblue tickets to go anywhere, even if I could have gone to Barcelona or Sydney or, heck, even if I'd gone to St. Lucia I know exactly what would have happened. I would have been laying out in the sun on some sparkling beach with turquoise water just a hop and a skip away and I would have shook my head and said to myself, "Man, I should've gone to see Kylie Minogue instead."

That's why this morning, as I type this, I am on the verge of hopping the train to O'Hare to meet up with my friend Ashley to board a flight to New York City to crash on my best friend's couch to go to the Hammerstein Ballroom to see Kylie Minogue live. Or, like my friend Rory said in response to an email I sent him back in July on the 10th anniversary of our sojourn to the Apple to see a concert, "How crazy the world is and how sometimes it ends up making perfect sense."Source URL: http://extravagancedeplumes.blogspot.com/2011/04/

A Call to Armless Struggle

    .
    How old are you?

Really, how old are you? And if you don't mind my asking, Why do you fucking have to have exact change when paying for everything? Is there some kind of fucking union that forces you to first, COLLECT coin, and then DISTRIBUTE coin? I mean, why do you ALL fucking do it! Men, women, old kids, do it. They are compelled to go up to cashiers with a bag full of change. Have you ever noticed it. They never come up with cold, hard cash and peel some lettuce. Those that do, are not all that old. I'm talking about the elderly.

I don't know if you noticed it, but I've noticed it all over. When I was in Florida,  when I was in North Carolina, Massa- chusetts, California, and in New York. Old people have this trembling, confused way about them. When they come up to the counter, like I've said before, it seems as if they are under the impression that the cashier is going to literally give them the items that they've brought to the counter. They have their purses closed, their money bag tied tight an stare at the cash register total as if it's in Chinese.

AND THEN THE FUCKING FUN BEGINS.

NOW, they reach for their purses. The old men too...they have change purses. And they have to search for them at first. This is a two pronged attack. First, they go for the cash if need be, and then the coin. The cash is always crumpled up, and has to be meticulously un-crumpled to check it's denomination. The funny thing is that as they un-crumple each bill and lay it out, they do so ever so slowly and carefully, until they've finished all of the cash that they have. Now it's time to go rooting through their pockets or purses again.

And then after retrieving their change purses, they upend them on the counter, spilling change all over. With care they pull the coins back towards them, then with a finger, slide a coin up to the center of the counter, followed by another, and another. But instead of doing this by the coin, like quarters first, then dimes, then nickels, which are easier to count that way - they start pushing the closest coin to their finger. When done this way, it's harder to count. 25, 30, 31, 32, 37, 62...you know what I mean? So in moments, Granny and Pappy Dirt are lost in trying to count their change. It doesn't happen fast enough though. It takes them five minutes of meandering to lose track.

You are pulling your hair out at this point. I mean, what the fuck else can you do? So is the cashier. When the elderly person(s) realize that they have to do the entire count again the cashier does it for them, this time separating the coins by their proper denominations and then separating the amounts. In moments, they've counted out the exact change, allowing Pappy Dirt to push all of his change all the way back into his change purse and get to move on with his short life.

All the while, he (or she) is talking to you at a million miles an hour with a  cheese eating, KoolAid grin on his face. It's enough to drive you mad. And whenever I'm behind an elderly person, I've come to expect it. The thing is, I'm prepared for this shit when I get older. I'm bucking the system, because if its not a system in place that is causing all of our old people to act this insane then it could only be one other thing.

The desire not to disappear. And this disturbs me. The older you get, the more you fade away, disappear, become nothing to family, friends, society. Then the change thing would only therefore be a cry for recognition, a shout for attention that is a painful cry, or wailing. They are begging for whatever little attention that they can get, so desperate to have someone just notice them for an instant. Just a moment, even if it's just to wait on line behind them, or count their change.

Think about that the next time you are standing behind one of them, waiting for your turn at the register.

Obama Cracks Down on Amish Farmers Selling Milk

    Cracking down on Amish farmers
Lancaster PA, Apr 29, 2011. Federal agents invaded an Amish farm in Pennsylvania at 5 a.m. to inspect cow-milking facilities then followed up the next day with a written notice that the farmer was engaged in interstate sale of raw milk in violation of the Public Health Services Act.

The farm invaded Tuesday is the one agents visited in February, driving past "Private Property" signs to demand Allgyer open his property for their inspection, saying, "You have cows. You produce food for human consumption."

The product in question: unpasteurized milk.

It's a battle that's been going on behind the scenes for years, with natural foods advocates arguing that raw milk, as it's also known, is healthier than the pasteurized product, while the Food and Drug Administration says raw milk can carry harmful bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli and listeria.

"It is the FDA's position that raw milk should never be consumed," said Tamara N. Ward, spokeswoman for the FDA, whose investigators have been looking into Rainbow Acres for months, and who finally last week filed a 10-page complaint in federal court in Pennsylvania seeking an order to stop the farm from shipping across state lines any more raw milk or dairy products made from it.

Pot smokers will not be prosecuted by Obama Administration
The farm's owner, Dan Allgyer, didn't respond to a message seeking comment, but his customers in the District of Columbia and Maryland were furious at what they said was government overreach.

"I don't want the FDA and my tax dollars to go to shut down a farm that hasn't had any complaints against it. They're producing good food, and the consumers are extremely happy with it."

Illegals will not be prosecuted by Obama Administratio
The FDA's actions stand in contrast to other areas where the Obama administration has said it will take a hands-off approach to violations of the law, including the use of medical marijuana in states that have approved it.

The Obama Administration has also said there will be no prosecution of illegal-immigrant students and youths.

At least President Barack Hussein Obama, D-Kenya, has finally decided to crack down on raw milk!Source URL: http://extravagancedeplumes.blogspot.com/2011/04/

KENTUCKY BORDER BOLOGNA

    by Jo Robertson

I recently returned from a visit with my brother Fred and his wife Sylvia in North Carolina. Their lovely house looks out toward the Pasquotank River, a gorgeous view. During this visit Fred and I spent a lot of time working on his personal story.

You see, I didn’t know Fred existed until about five years ago. He and I have different mothers, but the same father. But that’s a blog for another day.

Today’s subject is Kentucky Border Bologna! During my North Carolina trip, I discovered this delicious meat product. I use this term because I don't know what they put in it, and I suspect I'm better off remaining ignorant!

To a southern-bred gal like me a fried bologna sandwich is like heaven. I eat the artery-clogging stuff like an addict. I don’t care. Just give me my next fix. If you're wondering what can possibly be so great about bologna, you haven't tasted the really good stuff.

When my brother Fred visits his hometown in Kentucky, he always buys several of these bologna rolls. Sylvia freezes them and they slice off the amount they want as they use it.

Kentucky Border Bologna is sharp and salty, tasty either warm or cold. We had it for breakfast and lunch, and I could've eaten it for dinner, but Sylvia made me go healthy. Party pooper.

However, she packed several sandwiches for my wait at the airport on my way home, and luckily, airport security did not considered Kentucky Border Bologna a homeland security violation. Silly people.

Kentucky Border Bologna is the best bologna I've EVAH tasted. I had no idea where it was manufactured, but I heard a rumor that it isn’t shipped anywhere outside Kentucky.

That alone was enough to intrigue me, so I made a few long-distance phone calls. The meat department manager at Ralph's Food Fair in Grayson, KY -- a very nice gentleman with a lovely southern accent -- assured me that they did indeed sell Kentucky Border Bologna. He even tracked down the writing on the wrapping -- Kp Packing.

A little internet detecting led me to the company, Kp Packing in Erlanger, KY, where another helpful woman told me the product is now called Kentucky Best Bologna, a mistake in naming, in my opinion. There's something wickedly catchy and illegal about Kentucky Border Bologna.

The picture is from their website. Seriously, Kp, you need to get a larger picture!

Unfortunately, they do not ship outside of their region, so we Californians cannot jump on the internet and order some of this delicious spicy meat.

Sigh. I think I'm going into withdrawal.

I suppose my arteries will thank the company, but my taste buds are crying for a huge helping of this salty delight.

So, right now I’m eating my plain old PB&J sandwich and watching the delightful Timothy Olyphant in the latest episode of “Justified.”

Right now that’s the closest I can get to Kentucky and their delicious border bologna.

I’m in the mood for sharing our decadent foods. So, what’s your wicked delight, food-wise? Find any recent recipes or tasty treasures to share?

Here’s a recipe Sylvia gave me, a “healthy” version of Key Lime Pie. We ate about three of them when I visited, which is good because the recipe makes three.

    Sylvia’s Key Lime Pie

    3 reduced-fat graham cracker crusts
    16 oz light Cool Whip
12 oz frozen limeade (or lemonade)
    2 cans fat-free condenses milk

Beat together, pour into shells and freeze until firm.

Okay, let's get down and share our favorite decadence!

Three pretty things

Top chef Joel Robuchon opens Singapore restaurants

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Top chef Joel Robuchon opens Singapore restaurants.

French celebrity chef Joel Robuchon on Wednesday announced the opening of two restaurants at a casino resort in Singapore, his first outlets in Southeast Asia.

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, a workshop-inspired concept with chefs closely interacting with guests, and the more formal Joel Robuchon Restaurant will open on Thursday at the seaside Resorts World Sentosa complex.

Robuchon, 66, has received more stars from Michelin, the leading guide to fine dining, than any other chef in the world with a total of 26 so far.

There are 22 restaurants carrying his name, from Paris and other European cities to Las Vegas, New York, Tokyo, Nagoya, Hong Kong, Taipei and Macau.

“Today we are very happy to be in Singapore, especially because when we travel around the world, we meet a lot of Singaporean guests,” Robuchon said.

“They are very refined, very elegant, they know their wines very well, they know their food very well. So it is a very good time to be in Singapore right now,” he added.

The 54-seat Joel Robuchon Restaurant is a fine dining restaurant serving classic French cuisine “with the quality of service of a three Michelin-star restaurant,” a press statement said.

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, with 52 seats, is more experimental and draws inspiration from the preparation of Japanese cuisine and the atmosphere of Spanish tapas bars, it added.

Malaysian-owned Resorts World Sentosa and Singapore’s other casino complex, US-owned Marina Bay Sands, have attracted foreign celebrity chefs keen to tap into the affluent Southeast Asian and international tourist market in Singapore.

Carnival takes delivery of newest ship

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Carnival takes delivery of newest ship.

As guests on board cruise lines around the world prepare to toast the royal wedding April 29, Carnival Cruise lines has bucked the trend by announcing that it will be toasting its new ship, the Carnival Magic.

Guests on board all 100 of Carnival’s ships — some 227,000 in total — will be offered a complimentary champagne toast at dinner April 29, to recognize the delivery of the 3,690-passenger Carnival Magic.

Fiercely royal Cunard (itself Carnival-owned), for its part, released photos April 27 of its flagship Queen Mary 2 being loaded with Veuve Clicquot champagne and commemorative wedding cakes ahead of its “Royal Wedding Celebrations at Sea.”

Carnival Magic will set off on her maiden cruise May 1, leaving Venice for Barcelona before crossing the Atlantic to Galveston, Texas in the fall.

At 130,000 tons, she will be the largest ship ever to be based at Galveston and features some unique innovations, including an expansive open-air fitness complex with the first ropes course at sea (placed dizzyingly high above the water), a wraparound promenade with outdoor barbecue and the Waterworks Aqua Park.

According to reports in Australian publication eTravel Blackboard, she will also feature the largest show ever on board a Carnival ship, Destination: Unknown, starring stage magician and Las Vegas regular darrlin bands Byrne.

A comedy club, 1970s dance show, entertainment restaurant (complete with singing and dancing wait staff) and on-board game show will also be offered to travelers.

Mario Sorrenti to shoot next Pirelli calendar

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Mario Sorrenti to shoot next Pirelli calendar.

The illustrious calendar’s casting director, Jennifer Starr, has confirmed that Italian photographer Mario Sorrenti is 2012′s Pirelli man, Stylecaster reports.

Other fashion sites, including Fashion Copius and Fashionologie, had previously assumed that Steven Meisel would capture next year’s edition.

Karl Lagerfeld, Terry Richardson, or Patrick Demarchelier were chosen to shoot the calendar, which is commissioned by Italian tire company Pirelli, in past years.

Sorrenti, who is best known for his artful nudes in the pages of magazines such as Vogue, is expected to bring back a high-fashion feel following Lagerfeld’s timelessly elegant and Richardson’s sexually provocative pictures.

This year’s model cast, which regularly includes the freshest and most famous of faces, has not been confirmed.

Pirelli’s calendar gets released at the end of the year, but only to a handful of the company’s clients and business partners.

A more accessible option is French Vogue’s yearly calendar, for instance, which is just as racy and fashionable and which also enlists the world’s top photographers and fashion models.

Ralph Lauren car collection goes on display in Paris

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Ralph Lauren car collection goes on display in Paris.

A selection of cars owned by fashion legend Ralph Lauren will go on display in Paris this week, in a unique exhibition of one of the world’s most distinctive collections.

Ralph Lauren, who famously described cars as “moving art” in his 2004 book Speed, Style and Beauty, owns an extensive collection of vehicles which is rarely seen by the public — until now.

Seventeen models selected from the 1930s until the present day will be on display, offering a unique glimpse at the tastes of a major name in the fashion world.

Among the exhibits will be the Bentley Blower of 1929, immortalized in Ian Fleming’s early James Bond novels, a Mercedes-Benz SSK from 1930 owned by racing driver Count Carlo Felice Trossie and a Bugatti 57 SC Atlantic Coupe, one of only four ever made (and only two that remain).

Ferrari fans are well catered for — there are four in the collection — with a 375 Plus from 1954 (designed under the direction of Pinin Farina himself) and a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa from 1957 by automotive legend Sergio Scaglietti.

Ralph Lauren has collected the sounds of the engines online and to celebrate the launch, a Discovery Channel documentary on Ralph Lauren’s cars will be broadcast in France, Belgium and Switzerland on July 2 and July 3.

The Art of the Automobile is open April 28 through August 28 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

Arabian fantasy for royal wedding

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Arabian fantasy for royal wedding.

Luxury hotels in the United Arab Emirates are offering their guests an Arabian fantasy as Britain’s Prince William marries Catherine Middleton on Friday.

The Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, promises “a majestic experience fit for a king and deserving of an emperor” and said it wants to make the day unforgettable for its guests too.

The Palace, which bills itself as a seven-star hotel, offered an overnight stay from a modest $450 to $1,500 (300-1,010 euros) with a royal high tea thrown in.

“We are making sure to have them enjoy a unique wedding in a unique set up and surrounding,” said Emirates Palace general manager Hans Olbertz.

The hotel has suites going up to $11,500, according to its published rates. “Come and join this Arabian fantasy,” the hotel invites its guests. Included in the prices is a free buffet breakfast.

Dubai’s landmark Burj Al-Arab which is designed to resemble the sails of an Arabian dhow, offered a chance to win free nights at the super luxury hotel for those joining the royal wedding party there.

“Be sure to arrive in your finest dress and have a chance to win a two-night stay… for the best dressed, most elegant hat and most stylish couple,” the hotel said.

It said it will be “business as usual for Burj Al-Arab” on Friday although the popular Friday brunch will be turned into a “grand royal brunch” where a “bottle of the bubbly” will be thrown in on the house.

Most restaurants and bars in the UAE plan to show the day’s events on big screens hoping to cash in on the royal wedding fever that also coincides with the weekend in the region.
